Can You Sing The Strokes? Vocal Range, Voice Type and Song Fit

Of the 15 Strokes songs we have rated, 14 land in our higher-risk tier. One catalog, one exception. We track a lot of artists, and difficulty spreads almost never look like this: no gentle on-ramp, no comfortable middle, just a wall with a single door in it. Before you pick a song, it is worth understanding why a band famous for sounding effortless produces numbers like these.

The voice is Julian Casablancas, and the public consensus calls him a baritone. Our estimated artist range runs F#2 to C5, and estimated is the operative word: we have no researched Strokes songs yet, all 15 ranges are modeled, and exact notes here should be read as provisional. But the shape those estimates sketch is remarkably consistent, baritone depth at the bottom and song after song pushing up to A4, A#4, even C5, which is five to seven semitones above the F4 ceiling of the baritone band. That is the entire Strokes vocal story in one sentence: a low voice deliberately singing high, through distortion, while performing complete indifference about it.

If you sit baritone like Casablancas himself, honor the trick rather than the transcript and take keys down three to five semitones, which lands the peaks back inside your band while keeping the low end singable. Whoever you are, start with 12:51, estimated at A2 to A4 and rated 50, the only Strokes song under our higher-risk line, a synth-lit midtempo that lets you practice the deadpan without the altitude. Then try The Adults Are Talking, same estimated A2 to A4 shape, from the 2020 album that finally won the band a Grammy, where the light falsetto passages are a feature to float rather than a wall to climb. Save Reptilia, estimated at G2 to C5 and rated 87, the hardest thing in the catalog, for a night when your voice has already proven it is all the way on.

Female voices get less obvious guidance here, so let us be concrete. Taken up an octave, the hooks push past the top of the alto band, which means most altos and mezzo-sopranos actually do better singing these songs as written, down in the original octave, treating the A4 tops as the same project the men face. It works: the low grumble of the verses turns into a genuinely cool color in a female chest voice, and nothing in our current estimates reaches below F#2. Sopranos are the exception and should simply pick their key by the chorus, since the verses will disappear either way and nobody at a Strokes night is listening for the verses.
