Bootcamp Day 4: Fixing What the Camera Flagged

The HumMatch TeamSeptember 9, 20266 min read

Yesterday you ran one session with camera coaching on and read the report. Today is about doing something with whichever one of the three it flagged.

Pick the one thing, not all three

If yesterday's report flagged more than one thing, resist the urge to fix everything in your next take. Trying to open your jaw wider, level your head, and breathe low all at once is a lot to hold in your body during a single phrase, and the usual result is that none of the three actually improves, because your attention is split three ways. Pick whichever one the report flagged most clearly and work on that alone today. The others can wait for a later session.

If it flagged mouth shape: an exaggerated vowel drill

Take a line from whatever you were singing and run it twice: once with your normal mouth shape, then once deliberately exaggerating how far your jaw drops on every open vowel, well past what feels necessary. It will feel almost cartoonish. That is the point, you are giving your jaw a wider range of motion to work with so your normal take can land somewhere in between exaggerated and closed, instead of defaulting to closed.

If it flagged posture: a level-eyes cue

Pick a fixed point at eye level, a spot on the wall, the top of your camera, and keep your eyes on it for the whole take instead of looking down at lyrics or off to the side. A tilted head is almost always downstream of where your eyes are pointed, so fixing the eyeline usually fixes the tilt without you having to think about your neck at all.

If it flagged breathing: a hand-on-belly cue

Put one hand flat on your belly, just below your ribs, and one hand resting on your upper chest. Breathe in before your first line and check which hand moves. If the chest hand rises and the belly hand barely does, that is the clavicular pattern the camera flagged. Reset and try again, this time consciously letting the belly hand rise first and keeping the chest hand as still as you can. It will feel slower and less dramatic than your usual breath. That slowness is the low breath actually working.

Practice the one fix, not three at once.

Coach Listens scores the same three things every time, so you can track whether today's fix actually moved the number.

Today's task: redo a session targeting only the one thing

Run another camera-on session today, with your attention entirely on the one habit you are correcting, and let the other two scores fall wherever they fall. Compare today's number for that one thing against yesterday's. A small improvement counts, this is one take, not a cure. The goal today is proving to yourself that a specific, targeted fix moves a specific, measured number, which is a very different feeling than vaguely trying to "sing better."

See if today's fix actually moved your number.

One targeted habit, one session, one comparison against yesterday.
